DSS (Decision Support System)

Defination:
Decision support system are a major catagory of management support systems.They are computer based information systems that provide information support to managers during the decision-making process.
Decision support system use:
Analytical models
Specialized databases
A decision maker's own insights and judgements
DSS Characteristics:
The computer must support the manager but not replace his or her judgement.
The main payoff of computer support is for semistructured problems.
Effective problem solving is interactive and enhanced by a dialog between the users and the system.
Components of a Decision Support System:
Hardware and Network Resources:
Personal computer worstations provide the primary hardware resource for DSS.
Software Resources:
DSS software packages contain software modules to manage DSS databases,decision models and end user/system dialogue.
Data Resources:
A DSS database contains data and information extracted from the databases of the organization, external DB and a manager's personal databases.
Model Resources:
The model base includes a library of mathematical models and anaticals stored as programs, subprograms,spreadsheets and command files.
People Resources:
Managers or thier staff specialists can use DSS to explore decision alternatives. Such end users can also devlop their own simple decision support system.
